What is Engraving?.
Engraving may have been one of the earliest attempts at ornamentation by scratching lines or cutting.Engraving in metal is done with a blunt chisel. Punching creates a decorative effect by arrangement of lines and dots in a definite artistic pattern. Etching is similar to carving. The lines here are a lot thinner and superficial.
In decorative metalwork a variety of pictures can be depicted, like landscapes, court scenes, group dances, temples, deities, etc. Other items like trays, glasses, flower vases, pots, tables, chairs etc. too are prepared with this work. This process is very similar to Carving process.
Carving: A subtractive process in which a sculpture is formed by removing material from a block or mass of wood, stone, or other material, using sharpened tools. Most of useful objects like animals, bowls, vases, teapots etc. are made using carving process. Stone and wood carving are very commonly.
Handicraft, also known as craftwork or simply craft, is a type of work where useful and decorative devices are made completely by hand or using only simple tools. Usually the term is applied to traditional means of making goods. The individual artisanship of the items is a paramount criterion, such items often have cultural and/or religious significance. Items made by mass production or machines are not handicrafts.
Usually, what distinguishes the term handicraft from the frequently used category arts and crafts is a matter of intent: handicrafted items are intended to be used, worn, et cetera, having a purpose beyond simple decoration. Handicrafts are generally considered more traditional work, created as a necessary part of daily life, while arts and crafts implies more of a hobby pursuit and a demonstration/perfection of a creative technique. In practical terms, the categories have a great deal of overlap.
All handicraft are handmade from different wooden material like teak, mahogany, sonokeling (rosewood) or coconut wood. The wood is kiln-dried to prevent warping or cracking in different weather condition . Most of handicraft are natural but some of them are painted (varnished) with lacquer specially mixed to meet the non-toxic requirements international standrad. Since each item is made by hand, they may differ slightly from those shown.
